* Keep any gifts made personally to you or inheritance received during the marriage in an account in your name only. Gifts and inheritance received during a marriage are considered non-marital property as long as they are not commingled with marital assets.
* Do not commingle marital assets – certain assets acquired during the marriage –with non-marital assets.
* If you own stock in a closely held business, keep the stock in your name and have a buy-sell agreement with the company and/or a succession plan in the event of your death or disability.
